Myopia Or Short-Sightedness - A Common Problem Faced By Everyone

Author: Kevin Pederson

Myopia is a condition which is also known as short-sightedness and has been a problem area for many people. This kind of condition means that your capacity to see distant objects is not clear and appearing to be blurred. Your vision can be corrected by the use of glasses or contact lenses and also through laser eye surgery.

The eyesight gets blurred when the focus of the light is in front of the retina rather than on the retina. Some of the things that would irritate you are the blur images, headache and tired eyes. The symptoms of myopia may also vary from person to person. A doctor's guidance is must when such matters come into light.

It usually starts during your childhood, getting worse by the time you are in your teens. This occurs when your eye is greater than the optical length creating the blurred image. History of myopia in the family also causes myopia or short-sightedness among children. The children are more likely to develop such problems due to the hereditary. This kind of condition does not create any problems to your health, but some may develop retinal degeneration.

Though there are not many problems with people suffering with myopia but in the later on stages of your life there are chances of developing glaucoma and other eye disorders. With regular check up one can avoid severe damage to your eye. Some other problems which cause myopia are due to lack of vitamins, improper reading habits and the condition running in the family.

The common treatment for myopia or short-sightedness is the use of glasses or contact lenses. It can be worn by anyone from a two-year-old to a 80-year-old. Even though glasses may not be that trendy, people choose to wear contact lenses. You can also get surgery done which include LASIK (Laser in-situ keratomileusis), Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and Radial keratotomy depending upon your individual needs.
